Daring to be Different

If you like “off the beaten path” you’ll love Anna Maria Island. The beaches are accessible, the seafood is fresh and the neighborhoods are authentic. The “vibe” is downright irresistable.

Starting the morning at Ginny & Jane E’s is my way of getting the day going right. A combination retail store (one-of-a-kind items) and fabulous deli-coffee place, Ginny & Jane E’s has a food counter where we grabbed breakfast, sat at a table and enjoyed the shopping. If you like fun and funky, this will be your nirvana.

From there, moving towards the Bay, we walked out on two fishing piers — the City and the Rod & Reel Piers. My favorite was the Rod & Reel Pier, north of the City dock with a restaurant at the end. The restaurant is a “must” as the view is intoxicating and the fish is fresh.

Meandering through the surrounding neighborhoods, you will see some truly authentic homes but more than that, you will find “real” Florida motels that have been updated and charmed. I was thoroughly enchanted and noticed citrus trees in the front yards – a real sign of authentic Florida. I also stumbled upon a family of Wood Storks walking through the neighborhood. Another authentic thrill.

The island has cute shops all over – we found a reasonably priced beach shop called the Three Island Monkeys and the Sand Dollar gift shop with a colorful array of beachy home decor items.

A “must” place to eat is Skinnys – a beachy hamburger joint. This “come in your bathing suit” eatery is reminiscent of my childhood – small, cozy, screened-in pub/restaurant overflowing with laughter. I hear there are a few other good restaurants to try: Beach Bistro and the Sandbar Waterfront Restaurant. Next on my list.

As you travel down to the south end of the island, you will find plenty of beach and a lot of parking. Anna Maria is comfortable, laid back and welcoming – and will be on my “favorites” list for a long time.

Sarasota restaurant among Fine Dining Hall of Fame winners

SARASOTA – Nation’s Restaurant News has selected the 2009 inductees for its prestigious Fine Dining Hall of Fame. Among them is a well known Sarasota restaurant: Michael’s On East. Sarasota is already known for having one of the best beaches in the nation. Now the city has a nationally-ranked restaurant as well.

This award is said to be like an Oscar of the restaurant industry. The magazine has placed more than 220 restaurants in the Fine Dining Hall of Fame, which was started in 1980.

This year’s restaurant honorees include:

Barolo Grill in Denver
Blue Ginger in Boston
Bouley in New York City
Herbsaint in New Orleans
Naha in Chicago
Nana Restaurant in Dallas
Michael Mina in Las Vegas
Michael’s on East in Sarasota, Fla.

Businesses moving on Old Main Street

BRADENTON — A popular downtown Bradenton drinking establishment is being kicked out of its current home on Old Main Street.

A lease for the Lost Kangaroo Pub will not be renewed by landlord Mike Carter when it expires Sept. 31. Instead, Carter says he is working on replacing the pub, at 427 12th St. W., with a new bar.

Meanwhile, Robert Wood-ring, owner of the Lost Kangaroo, has a sales contract pending on the nearby Palmer Building, at 408 12th St. W., where he plans to relocate his bar. The building is home to the Arthritis Foundation thrift shop, which is scheduled to close June 1.

Carter didn’t disclose reasons for canceling Lost Kangaroo’s lease.

“Their lease term was coming to a close and we chose not to renew their lease,” Carter said. “Where they are going and what they are doing, you will have to contact them.”

Carter said negotiations are under way for a replacement tenant.

“I expect that tenant will also be in the beverage business,” Carter said. “I think that Old Main Street has been a popular gathering place for years, and an increase in the beverage business will only enhance the appeal of the area.”

Carter declined to give any further information about the new tenant.

Woodring said he wasn’t given reasons regarding the cancellation of the lease.

“At first, I was disappointed,” Woodring said. “Then I realized I’m probably better off.”

If the sales contract is finalized, Woodring said the Lost Kangaroo will remain open at its current location through the fall as the bar relocates across the street.

“I’m hoping for my patrons and employees just a short down time, maybe one or two weeks,” Woodring said.

The thrift storehas no plans to relocate, said Anne Forrest, president and chief executive officer of the Arthritis Foundation’s Florida Chapter.

“We’re sad to see it close,” Forrest said. “We enjoyed having it, but we’ll be able to focus our efforts on our programs and our services.”

Manatee Snorkel & Dive Tours - Chrystal RiverEver thought about swimming with the Manatees? If so you should consider a snorkel tour at Chrystal River, home to the largest concentration of Manatees in the world. Manatees are air-breathing water-dwelling mammals that can grow up to 12 feet long, and weigh up to 3500 pounds. The best time to see wild manatees at the Crystal River is from December to March, when the weather is coolest, and the manatees seek the warm water springs.

Canoe & Kayak Tours - Thonotosassa

Escape to nature and enjoy a canoe/kayak trip on Hillsborough River. Hillsborough River is one of the best rivers in the state to observe wildlife. Watch the birds, turtles and aligators along the river. Average canoe trips range from two hours to a full day. You will definitely have a lot of fun!

Sponge Docks – Tarpon Springs

The “sponge capital of the world” is still alive at the original sponge docks where sponge boats berth alongside authentic Greek restaurants, shops and bakeries. Shop in more than 100 stores, including originals still owned by the founding families. Eat at more than 15 restaurants, including eateries such as Pappas, which are internationally known. Take cruises down the Anclote River, go deep-sea fishing, visit the Coral Sea Aquarium, see a movie depicting the sponge industry and gawk at the authentic sponge boats that are still in use. The town is known for celebrating such things as Greek Independence Day in March and an arts and crafts festival in April. But by far the most noteworthy event takes place every January 6 with the Epiphany ceremony, an old Greek Orthodox rite.

Combining thrill rides with wonderful animal attractions, a trip to Busch Gardens will fascinate everyone in the family. The theme park is divided into nine different areas fashioned after locations in Africa. It features some of the nation’s best roller coasters. The park has also devoted considerable attention to wild-animal rescue and attractions. Visitors can observe lions, giraffes, hippos, gorillas and other creatures from the safety of the Serengeti Railway, walkways or the Skyride. Adults without kids have the luxury of enjoying some of the cultural shows, whether performed right on the street or in a theater. Later, enjoy a free beer sample and stay for pizza and deli sandwiches, jazz and ragtime open-air music.
